Fresh sea air, the sound of the waves, and a sweeping view of the Baltic Sea: In the fall, a trip to the beach is worth it even without a beach bag. Now is the time for long walks, little discoveries along the water’s edge, and a warm cup of tea with a view of the sea. Between Boltenhagen, Wismar Bay, and the island of Poel lie a variety of coastal stretches—we’d like to introduce you to five of our favorite beaches for a fall outing in Northwest Mecklenburg—ranging from pristine to lively, all of which pair perfectly with a break in Bades Huk.
1. Hohen Wieschendorf: Nature Right on Your Doorstep
Sometimes the most beautiful destination is just a few steps away. For guests staying at Bades Huk, the beach experience begins right on the Hohen Wieschendorf Peninsula. The natural beach, coastal landscape, and marina are what make this place so charming.
In the fall, it’s worth taking things a little slower: watch the light on the water, discover the different stones along the shore, and just stop for a moment. You don’t need a big itinerary to enjoy a beautiful vacation moment here.
Unser Herbsttipp: Start your day with a walk on the beach and follow it up with breakfast at the Marina Café by the sea. That’s the complete beach experience!
2. Wohlenberger Wiek: Plenty of space for little explorers
The curved bay of Wohlenberger Wiek, with its long, natural sandy beach, is a lovely destination for a family outing. In the fall, it’s the little things that take center stage: seashells in the sand, tracks along the shore, and the question of what the waves might have washed ashore today. Instead of covering a set distance, here the journey itself can simply be the destination. With warm clothes and a small picnic in your backpack, a quick stroll along the beach can quickly turn into an entire afternoon outdoors.
Unser Herbsttipp: Turn it into a scavenger hunt: Who can find a striped rock, a particularly small shell, or a track in the sand? Afterward, leave the finds there to create a little beach scene.
3. Boltenhagen: A Walk on the Beach with a View of the Pier
If you’re looking to combine the beach with seaside charm, Boltenhagen is the place for you. The long sandy beach is perfect for a stroll, and the pier stretches out over the water, offering a different view of the coast. It’s especially pleasant for a varied fall outing: you can easily combine the beach, the promenade, and the town center. First, enjoy the fresh air and the sound of the waves, then stroll through town and take a leisurely break.
Unser Herbsttipp: Combine your walk along the waterfront with a return trip along the dune promenade. That way, you'll experience this stretch of coastline from different perspectives.
4. Timmendorf-Strand on Poel: Beach, Harbor, and Lighthouse
A day at the beach with a seaside backdrop awaits you in Timmendorf-Strand on the island of Poel. The sandy beach, small harbor, and lighthouse are all located close together here, making the town a lovely destination for an autumn island getaway.
It’s the contrast between the beach and the harbor that makes for such a varied experience: first, take a walk along the water’s edge; then, look at the boats and discover the lighthouse as a great photo opportunity.
Unser Herbsttipp: Take some time to explore both sides of the town—the sweeping view from the beach and the details around the harbor. By the way, I’m referring to Timmendorf-Strand on Poel, not Timmendorfer Strand in Schleswig-Holstein.
5. Am Schwarzen Busch: The Vastness of the Baltic Sea on the Island of Poel
The Am Schwarzen Busch beach is also one of our favorites for a fall outing. On the north coast of Poel, a sandy beach meets a sweeping view of the Baltic Sea—a beautiful setting to clear your head and enjoy some time outdoors together. You don’t need much here: a walk along the water’s edge, a break with some hot tea, and a family photo in the autumn light. It’s often these simple moments that stay with us the longest from our vacations.
Unser Herbsttipp: Pack a thermos and a seat cushion. On a dry, sunny day, this way you can enjoy the sea air even during a longer break.
Bades Huk: Your starting point for fall days at the beach
Whether right on your doorstep in Hohen Wieschendorf or on a trip to Boltenhagen and the island of Poel: From Bades Huk, you can rediscover the coast of Northwest Mecklenburg time and time again. After enjoying some fresh air and a long walk, your cozy beach apartment awaits. Cook together, have a game night, or warm up in the sauna—that’s the perfect way to wind down a fall day by the sea.
Our tip for when you're on the go: Be sure to pack windproof clothing and shoes with good traction. Pay attention to weather conditions and local advisories; the hours of operation for cafés and tour offerings may vary during the off-season.
