If you let your gaze wander from the marina pier in Hohen Wieschendorf across Wismar Bay, you can see Wismar to the northeast. The Hanseatic city is only about 15 kilometers away, making it easily accessible by bike. A day trip there is definitely worth it. Whether it’s a visit to the zoo, the PhanTechnikum museum, or a stroll through the beautiful old town with its brick Gothic buildings. It is precisely these unique buildings that have contributed, among other factors, to Wismar—along with Stralsund—being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. This year, the cities are celebrating the 20th anniversary of this special distinction.
But there’s another anniversary coming up in Wismar. One hundred years ago, director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau filmed “Nosferatu” in Wismar’s Old Town. Inspired by these two highlights, the artist couple Johanna Kanka-Maué and Lars Maué created an oversized Nosferatu figure, which will accompany a special guided tour this year. Called “Vampir 21,” the tour takes participants to the film’s original shooting locations and many other special spots in Wismar’s old town.
